442th International City of Peace

A Watershed Moment in World History

“As part of the global Cities of Peace network, we aim to create a safe, empowering environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together to build a future rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and hope.” Gervin Baila Kitwika and Norbert Byambo are not so much Refugees as Peacemakers. They live in a Refugee Camp that has been around for over 60 years. Together with other ICP Liaisons in over 10 villages in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda, Gervin and Norbert are unifying peace efforts — an historical first — to build peace in the Settlement, which has refugees from D.R. Congo, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, “Our mission,” the Collaborative of Nakivale Liaisons have decided by democratic vote, “is to establish a thriving and harmonious community within Nakivale Refugee Settlement that empowers individuals through education, sustainable development, and social justice.” With the encouragement and support of International Cities of Peace, these courageous Refugee Peacemakers are showing the way!
